Hi, this is a bit of a stretchy topic, but what is considered "vice" in the regular world is often used by fictional characters. How do you think anime/manga handles this topic?

If nothing for me smoking characters always give good examples of cool to the feeling, like these two:

Kogoro Mouri from Detective Conan and Kokoro and Vasco Shot from One Piece come to mind as drunks. :XD

I think the manga industry doesn't seem to care much about this topic. Even with manga aimed at kids, like Naruto and One Piece, you have at least one character that smokes, like Asuma and Sanji. Drinking also seems to be quite common too, as seen with Jiraiya and Zoro. I don't think drugs are as common, but you should have mentioned women as well. Master Roshi, Jiraiya, Sanji, and Brook are known perverts and lechers.

I guess it depends on the genre - there are some manga that deal with the topic of drugs (booze and cigarettes are more common)

Being a prime (and very worthy) example.

Hmm, does shoujo have smoking, drinking, or sex/perversion as occasional or constant occurrence? I only remember Kimi ni Todoke, and it had nothing like that. All I know is that nearly all shounen I have read has had at least one of those things, with majority involving all three.

As far as I'm aware, it depends on the magazine: Nakayoshi and Ribbon are aimed at elementary/junior high school students so references to smoking, drinking and sex are prohibited. Shoujo mangas that are aimed at an older audience and borderline josei are probably more lax. There was actually controversy about sex in shoujo a while back, but I'll have to Google to dig up the articles.

Hmm, that's interesting. Still, Japan seems to be more relaxed about these kinds of stuff in a kid manga than the Americans.

I thought in current times their starting to turn away from having characters of underage smoking and such just for the cool factor and leaving it to the bad guys at schools etc. I dont even think in the context of jump school age teens and such are even smoking in this current gen.

I thought the one piece arc with them giving that drug to the kids was a bit too much in recent times.

Never had much of an issue with people being a bit under the influence in manga at least in what I read, though there is the occasional realistic oriented older story in which it shows the signs of a parent or someone that drinks too much that causes harm on a family for establishing drama and terrible family circumstances. I dont like such concepts in stories but being handled in a realistic way and not for jokes or laughs is respectable.

I agree with Sharkbait. I don't read Naruto or One Piece, but I'm really scratching my head trying to think of prominent characters who smoke or do drugs in manga.

I think it's weird that in Beelzebub there were just a few characters who do smoke. The only ones I can name off the top of my head are Saotome, Takamiya (like mentor like student?), Ringo, and Ikaruga Suiten. Takamiya and Ringo are baddies, so of course they smoke and blow their puffs over people's faces. With Saotome and Ikaruga...I guess its just from bitterness of not being young? :XD Tamura probably didn't want to encourage smoking or doing drugs even though it was a delinquent manga. Its more common in the manga for people to be violent than it is to smoke, while real life seems to tell us the opposite.

What's funny is that Sanji is nineteen in his introduction, but only people who are twenty and older are allowed to smoke in Japan. I think someone sent a SBS question about it in one volume. :XD

Other smokers I have in mind are Gin (Detective Conan) and Shibazaki (Zankyou no Terror). Nearly all their scenes consist of smoking so that's why I can remember.

Oh, the Third Hokage from Naruto and the master from Fairy Tail smoke hashish. Yusuke Urameshi also used to smoke too, from what I recall. Lunch from Dragon Ball does as well.
